Doctor Who, Series 5, episodes I and II
Apr. 14th, 2010 07:20 pmYes, I know I am late. I've been a very very busy kid, and also frustrated etc.
Let's see... before we start this, people, if you aren't already watching Who, you need to start now. This is the time. Seriously, this is the loveliest time. It's very, very brill. Matt Smith as the eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillam as his companion Amy Pond are both amazing (Smith perhaps amazinger) and it's all basically sunshine and puppies of awesome.
Now.
The Eleventh Hour: I can't really find anything I dislike about this - well, I am not overly fond of "Geronimo" as a catch phrase, or of the CG. But I've watched it like five times now, and I can't express my glee in terms to make it justice. I LOVE Matt Smith's Doctor (much more than Tennant's, as he's less prone to climb the walls like a sugared-out two-year-old), and wee!Amelie was adorable. I don't know if it's mofftiem, or just everyone being tired of everywoman, but I find Amy's cookiness (both as a child and an adult) very refreshing. She doesn't have a crush on the Doctor, she has known Eleven longer than he has himself, she locks people's neckties in car doors and works as a kissogram... She's lovely and scottish and ginger and &hearts.
And Eleven: I was worried. I will admit that. I wasn't one of the "omg he will surely suck" people, but I was firmly seated in the "ok, I will see what he can do, but I won't expect anything"-chair. And now he's confirmed his position as my second favourite ever, after Five. Smith's a really good actor, Eleven is fun yet not hyper, tongue-in-cheek. He's still insane, but a more subdue insane. Loffly. Lovely hair, too.
I actually loved the plot to -- ok, so very datable, with the smartphone and all, and the spaceship was really ugly, but it worked. Moff does plottiness well, and I actually sat straight up at the realization (mine, not the show's) of what "the human residence" meant. I felt so sorry for wee!Amelia, and when Amy yells "why did you say five minutes?" at the Doctor, their faces are priceless. Good job, team Moff.
What I loved: The Doctor pretending he doesn't get involved, the Smilers, Liz 10, the claustrophobic oldschool-sensation sets, Amy not just wondering off but being told to (the "companion is incompetent at life" trope is so old), the voting booths, the solution.
What I liked less: the Doctor threatening to send Amy home (twice), that the Smilers weren't used or explained more, that everything wasn't explained more (could have been a 2-parter), the Doctor shouting (although to be fair, it was building up for a few minutes before asploding).
Overall, good ep. As Lizbee pointed out, Liz 10 gets to be a woman of color in power without being punished with death, which is unusual for nuWho, I loved Liz 10. I wasn't feeling as squeeful as for TEE, but I liked this one a lot still. There was such a warmth between Amy and Eleven at the end, that wasn't interrupted by daddy issues (Rose and Nine), a crush (Rose and Ten, Martha and Ten) or generally unapproachable personalities (Donna and Ten), just there. Not nixing any of the previous companions (although I feel Martha was mistreated by bad scripts and the stupid crush), I just enjoy Amy a bunch. We'll see how it goes.
